Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Co.,Ltd (“WS”), an affiliate of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, is a typical large modernized & integrated enterprise that provides products & services for both the military and the civilians, and develops in many diversified but related fields. It was founded in 1934 and listed among the 156 national major construction projects of the “First-Five Year” plan. In January, 1953, it was renamed Wuchang Shipyard, restructured to Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd in February, 2009, and renamed Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Co.,Ltd.


WS has maintained continuous growth in these years. Now WS boasts over 11000 employees and total assets amounting to 30,000,000,000 Yuan, and covers an area of 6,000,000 square meters. The three manufacture bases, namely Wuchang Headquarters, Qingdao Haixiwan and Wuhan Shuangliu, and the coordinated six product divisions, namely military industry & trade, civil vessels, bridge equipment, oceanographic engineering equipment, complete plant and steel structure, have been gradually established. The main economic indicators of WS have maintained a double-digit growth rate for 23 consecutive years since the 1990s; and in 2013, the output value, the value from market development and the sales income of WS all exceeded 10,000,000,000 Yuan.


International prevailing quality and EHS management systems have been established in WS; it holds the Class 1 license for the scientific research and production of national weaponry, and 60 other qualifications, including that for the design & manufacture of Type 1, 2 & 3 pressure vessels and that for the Class 1 professional contracting of manufacture and assembly of hydraulic metal mechanisms, and thus it is the enterprise with the most qualifications for professional contracting of advanced projects.


WS, a modernized base for the building of submerged and surface vessels, has created complete military industry manufacture codes and established a process system through independent innovation, and made significant contribution to the updating of the naval equipment and national defense of China. The military products fabricated by WSIC have been exported to many countries or regions, such as Africa, South Asia and Middle East.


WS, also a major manufacture base for public service ships, work ships and ocean engineering equipment in China, has the capacity to design and build 300,000 tonnage vessels. It has built more than 1400 ships, including public service ships, working ships, offshore service ships, bulk carriers and high-speed boats. The UT788 deep-water three-use working ship represents the most advanced level in manufacture of ocean engineering equipment in the world; the “China Maritime Surveillance 50” has successfully cruised around the Diaoyu Islands; the VS series of offshore service ships have been exported to such Western European countries as Greek and Norway. As the underwater floating body project for Petrobras was delivered to the satisfaction of the customer, the CJ46 platform and the DVC5000t floating crane & pipe-laying vessel was undertaken, WSIC has put itself in the rank of high-end ocean engineering equipment manufacturers in the world.


WS is a core supplier for many major projects in China. It has constructed large miter gates, access doors and underground power facilities for the Three Gorges Dam in the spotlight of the world; It was a participant in the construction of such large hydraulic facilities as the Gezhouba Dam, the Qing River Project and the Xionglong Water Control Project for the South-to-North water diversion, and the constructor of a number of advanced projects including the Three Gorges Ship Lift and the Xiangjia Dam Ship Lift; It, as the manufacturer of the satellite launch facilities for such satellite bases as Xichang, Jiuquan and Wenchang, contributed greatly to the successful launch of Tiangong-1 and Shenzhou series of spacecraft.


WS, being the pacemaker in the field of bridge steel structure manufacture in China, has participated in the construction of over 140 large steel structure bridges erected across major river systems in China. In the eastmost, there is Hangzhou Bay Bridge; in the westmost, Lhasa Liuwu Bridge; in the southwest, Guangxi Nanning Bridge; in the northmost, Qingdao Bay Bridge. Now it enters the markets of Southeast Asia, Chile and the United States of America. With Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, one of the new century project, undertaken by WSIC, its dominant position in the bridge market is consolidated.


WS has gained extensive construction experience in the field of complete plants. The associated products for ships have been recognized by the eight major classification societies including ABS, BV, DNV and LR, and sold well in over 10 countries or regions, such as Europe and America, Southeast Asia. The world got stunned by the Scroll, the Nine-ring Sphere, the Five-continent Music Stand, and the Memory Tower for the opening and closing ceremonies of 2008 Beijing Olympics manufactured by WSIC.


WS has a state level Technology Center, the National Academician Work Center for Hi-end Ship and Ocean Engineering Equipment, and has been appraised as the Top Ten Enterprises in Innovation Capacity in China’s Ship Industry, the National High Technology Enterprise, and the National Model in Technical Innovation. In 2013, WSIC ranked third in among the enterprise technology centers of national level in China’s ship industry; it ranks 336th in the list of Top 500 Manufacturers in China; and it ranked eighth in China’s ship industry.
